Healed in Hours

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.

I rarely get sick, so I was lucky I got full attendance for my entire secondary school life. When I fall sick, though, it will be really, really extreme. Last night, I was tossing and turning for hours just because of a dry throat and a 'runny' nose - so many tissue papers wasted. When I drank water, it was like pouring a drop of dew to a desert - my throat got burning sensations every few seconds or so.

I guess I had the whole package: dry throat, runny nose, scratchy left ear, cold/flu, headache, slight fever, weak legs, cold fingers, non-stop sweating AND thudding behind eyes. I switched off my fan, then wrapped myself like a mummy using my thick blanket. I was half-awake, half asleep and very irritated.

This morning when my feet touched the floor, an instant shock of cold surged up. SO COLD! Even the slightly chilly water was freezing to my hands.

I took my breakfast - no way fighting a virus without energy. After that I took my medicine with gulps of warm water, then sneezed all the way back to my room and back into my bed.

I felt powerless to do anything to cure myself and just let myself drift back to sleep. I prayed, I wished, I hoped.

I once was lost, but now I'm found...

A thought oozed into my mental attic, like sunlight slanting in through a window. I remembered, four years ago I was caught in a situation similar to this - a sudden illness. Back then, I was in a worse form - trembling from cold, mind shut off and severe thudding throughout my whole body. I'd battled the sickness in my sleep, literally, then the next morning I was myself again, attending classes and meeting friends without them ever detecting anything wrong with me. Miraculous. The thought cheered me up considerably and boosted my confidence.

Was blind, but now I see.

So with this thought in mind, I pulled on a sweater and came to college (yeah, I'm still in my college's computer lab). After taking medicine, I was feeling a little drowsy, but I forced myself to stay awake - listening to lectures and even taking down notes with my cold hand.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved...

Had a 'snack' with a gang of friends at McDonald's. Food and coffee really helped a lot. I felt better and was content enough listening to my friends chatting away. Those chats lifted my mind away from the fact that I was still ill and it really helped me to regain my full consciousness.

How precious did that grace appear, the hour I first believed.

I lunched with my friends, being careful to choose 'patient food'. In this case, it was spaghetti bolognaise and hot barley. Hanging out with friends can really be curative.

Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come;

So here I am, feeling much better and will be attending Orientation Night, which will start in about two hours. How miraculous is the power of believing!

’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.

In Transition

I'm waiting for my next class to start, which is about two-thirty in the afternoon. Seriously bored. So here I am, blogging LIVE from my college.

I came to know that college life is fun but never easy. Every day has to be planned, from clothing, transportation, food to timetables. Miss one detail and you'll be drifting directionless.

There is another side to college life, though. You get to meet people from all over the world - here we have students from Kazakhstan, Korea, Ghana and even Maldives! Most of the lecturers are interesting but honestly I'll always miss my previous teachers.

You can get your hands on any food here - lots of fast food chains, restaurants and even a Starbucks. Everything is expensive, that's for sure.

The past few days were really tiring. My typical wake-up time would be six in the morning, though I usually nap a little before lectures start. On certain days I have long breaks in between lectures and tutorials (like now). Some days my lectures end in the evening, so by the time I reach home I'm all worn out.

Since I'm taking Arts, the maths is a wee bit easier. I wish I can take Calculus, it's more fun and challenging. Just the other day I had to put up with this foreign girl who asked me about y=mx+c. She came up with different weird examples and nudged me every few seconds to ask me and solve them for her. At first I was patient, happy even to guide her, but as the hour dragged on, I got frustrated which I think you would if you were in my shoes.

English lectures are a bit boring because we have to deal with grammar. Haven't officially started writing yet, just analysing and learning ways to write essays, like what devices you should use, what errors you should avoid and how to make your writing flow smoothly. Boring, boring, boring.

The cold environment here just makes it all the more miserable. My fingers and toes froze the first two days here, fortunately now I know how to get around it. Avoid seats anywhere near the air conditioners - they blast cold wind all over you. I try to wear thick shoes these days.

I miss everything that was familiar to me. My family and I share less time together now - I can't wait for the weekend to come. My old friends, how I miss seeing you guys.

Dolce Far Niente

Addiction is the hallmark of every infatuation-based love story. It all begins when the object of your adoration bestows upon you a heady, hallucinogenic dose of something you never even dared to admit that you wanted - an emotional speedball, perhaps, of thunderous love and roiling excitement. Soon you start craving that intense attention, with the hungry obsession of any junkie. When the drug is withheld, you promptly turn sick, crazy and depleted (not to mention resentful of the dealer who encouraged this addiction in the first place but who now refuses to pony up the good stuff anymore - despite the fact that you know he has it hidden somewhere, goddamn it, because he used to give it to you for free). Next stage finds you skinny and shaking in a corner, certain only that you would sell your soul or rob your neighbours just to have that thing even one more time. Meanwhile, the object of your adoration has now become repulsed by you. He looks at you like you're someone he's never met before, much less someone he once loved with high passion. The irony is, you can hardly blame him. I mean, check yourself out. You're a pathetic mess, unrecognizable even to your own eyes.

So that's it. You have now reach infatuation's final destination - the complete and merciless devaluation of self.
—Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love)

I watched the movie this morning. It's been quite some time since I last alternately cried and laughed watching a movie. It wrings your heart when the protagonist wakes up in the middle of the night, feels lost and sits down to pray to God. That's when I cried - her words reflect my situation.

I love the details in the movie - like the sun slanting in, the characters preparing a meal, the flashbacks and reflections. Vivid colours, beautiful scenes, lively dialogues. You'd laugh at some of the jokes and learn a few new words throughout the movie (my favourite is dolce far niente). The director successfully captured the beautiful pain of life and now I'd really like to read the original work itself.

My First Four Days of 2011

31/12/10 ~ 1/1/11
I craned my neck, like everyone else surrounding me, and watched the fireworks. I let my thoughts drift with the flow of loud music and stared hard into the quickly vanishing bursts of colours.

Earlier that night, after having dinner someplace nearby, my family and I wandered aimlessly among the crowd. Met some classmates and schoolmates. Walked until my back ached. Soaked in thoughts and memories. Wondered what will happen in 2011. Feared for my future.

Breakfasted with parents the next morning in some noisy coffee shop. Read about an education fair in the papers, was persuaded by Mum to attend. Thought through, and promised to visit on Jan. 2.

Shopped for lunch materials after breakfast with parents. Surprised to find out that no plastic bags will be given every Saturday in hypermarkets and supermarkets alike. Met Siang Rui on the way back home.

Continued shopping after lunch. Chose curtains with Mum and advised Dad on buying shirts (since I'm the one ironing his laundry) but still couldn't get any new clothes for myself. Not in the mood, I guess.

Attended my cousin's full moon buffet dinner. Chatted lightly with old relatives about my future.

2/11/11
Canceled the trip to Nanyang Education Fair. Parents made an impromptu decision to bring me to HELP University College's open day.

Talked with two lecturers there, one of them saying that I looked pretty much decided but my father was still holding back. Nice chat with them. My father wanted me to go for the January intake, so we went through the whole process of registering, paying fees, making Student ID and visiting the campus.

I'm taking foundation in Arts. Will start next week.
HELP,别觉得我太心急 ;)
Visited the night market. Saw Ee Lyn and Ling Sze :) Who say friends lose contact after graduation?

3/1/11
Woke up before the prayers rang out of the nearby mosque. Slept back again and was hit by rays of sun after waking up for the second time. Did some chores after breakfast. Received an e-mail from HELP (those guys are quite fast and efficient) around eleven. The sky darkened dramatically after that.

Rain poured around two in the afternoon. Dozed off for a few hours. Did some serious reading after dinner.

4/1/11
Again, woke up before the prayers. Avoided going back to sleep, exercised a little to wake myself up fully. Breakfasted alone, read the papers. Surfed the Net and found an article on the discovery of a giant cave in Vietnam. Read through others' updates on blogs and social networking sites.

Tried my hand at stir-frying vegetables for lunch. Managed to get the taste and look!

Rained again just now, more like an annoying drizzle. Blogged this thing out.

END.
