Wednesday, 21 December 2011

21/12/11

Light me from without, too.

It came swift and sudden, like a flash of lightning. All the lights went off abruptly, save for the scant streetlamps outside our house.

A blackout. Mum and I lighted some candles to dispel the gloom, while Dad looked for our latest electricity bill. In a pool of light cast by the candles, we huddled close like scouts around a campfire, seeking out a particularly crucial string of numbers from amongst the fine print on the bill. 15454. Dad tried dialing it a few times, before finally getting through to an operator.

Dad succinctly described our situation, first in English, then in Malay. He then asked whether there was any complaints made before his. None, according to our operator.

Boisterous kids spilled out into the street, playing and shrieking and laughing like nobody's business. I wonder why children can still play and find joy during a power outage or in the midst of floods, for that matter.

In the dim darkness, even the soft orange glow coming from a nearby streetlamp was a spotlight, highlighting the rainwashed blades of leaves and grass. Every passing headlight brought us a faint glimmer of hope that some repair and maintenance crew would come and save us from this darkness. As if!

My parents retired themselves to bed, seeing as there was nothing to do but to wait endlessly. I contented myself with idle musings, and put them to paper occasionally. I could have slept earlier, but decided not to.

Random shouts and snatches of conversation floated through the open door, each of them bearing interesting tidbits.
"... power shortage earlier, in the afternoon and a telephone report was made..."
"...smaller crew came, but they failed to restore the power ... could've been their mistake, who knows for sure ..."
"Actually, only half of the houses on the street were without current. "
"A coconut tree..."
"... leaves got entangled with the substation's cables.."
"The crew will come in two hours."
Light me from within, my blog's title read, how apt. I'd never given it much thought until now. When I saw halos around the candlelight, I figured that I should sleep instead of wait.

As I tried to drift off to sleep, I thought, light me from without, too.

***

A noise somewhere nearby roused me. Sound of a generator, perhaps?

As I crept down the stairs, more noises and light greeted me. The television set was on (mumbling to itself), as well as the lights in the kitchen. For half a heartbeat I thought somebody had broken into our house, then I reminded myself that we 'd left the TV set and the lights on, before the blackout.

The children had finally returned to their own homes, leaving only a stretch of silence.

8/12/11

Fooh! Completed three out of four papers for my finals. Another one to go, tomorrow morning.

These days I deviated from my regular sleeping hours, just to make sure what I must know went into my mind. Early preparations for these exams really helped because I had insufficient time to juggle three subjects. Those questions asked of me things that I revised weeks ago - I was surprised and happy that I still remembered them. Yet, there were a few questions that were unfamiliar and out of my ... err ... field of expertise.

Can't wait for tomorrow's paper to be over! Then I can have a real life ;D

Off to study now.

我依然会全力以赴;

Thursday, 24 November 2011

SKIP

A Couple of Quotes to Munch On

"
My first advice is that ... love yourself first, before you do anything else. My second advice ... if somebody block you along the way, you say to them, 'excuse me, I'm going to pass now, let me go through' and just move on. Don't ever look back."
- by Adibah Noor (not in exact wording)
"Thank you God for giving me this body. Imperfect though it may be, it has carried me and protected me all these years."

In Memoriam Steve Jobs

Pic credit: Jonathan Mak
Throughout history there were three apples that changed the world: that of Adam and Eve, Newton and Steve Jobs. - Source: Internet
I'm not denying those bad things he'd done, but Steve Jobs really was a revolutionary figure in technology. Such unrivaled achievements, such great influence and such strong spirit - no wonder people honoured him with the, ahem, "third apple".

Although I'm not an Apple consumer, rest in peace Steve Jobs, knowing that you'd changed the world, a feat few people can claim.

4/10/11

HWAITING!

Tempting Little Ones

It was drizzling this morning. The sky was overcast. Damn cold you know!

I don't know what came over me. I marched through the rain to get to a Subway and bought four differently flavoured cookies. Truth be told, I'm not a big fan of Subway because my shirt always smells funny when I leave their place. This was the first time I bought their cookies and first time eating them too.

Fourth cookie shielded from the rest. A closer look ...

Got your saliva dripping already? Haha.

5/9/11

My third semester started off with a .. snap! Yea, not a bang, but a snap!

I reached college around 7.30 am. The parking was half-full already! I was grateful that I arrived earlier than I should.

Not much of seeing-old-friends-meeting-new-ones today. Last week was supposed to be our first week of the new semester. So, now second week's started and the lecturers are trying their best to cram in two week's worth of lectures into one. I could only alternately nod, smile or stare at my lecturers.

Statistics was okay. The lecturer came back to teach, after leaving the college for 8 years. Why all those exciting things keep happening to our intake?

Psychology was fun. Full of laughter for the first lecture. I have no complaints to raise.

The only tragedy that happened on such a 'fine' day was my bag snapped. I carried it with one shoulder and let the snapped part to dangle, trying to act nonchalant about it.

So much for the first day. Tomorrow should be fun, because I have a four hour break! Gosh. How to stand so long a break, I wonder.

Good luck to those who are having their exams! :)

No, no, no.

Grayson Gilbert's Story

Grayson Gilbert's story is worth rereading. I find that it inspires me. : )

the statue of Jesus in John Hopkins Hospital.

As for now, my condition seems to be in control. Less stomach pain and no diarrhea (none since yesterday, thankfully). Hopefully I'll regain my full health soon!

This Pain .. Urgh!

You see me all year round. Full attendance (I'm glad about that :D) for the past five years because I rarely fall sick. If I do get ill, it's very serious.

I've been having chronic stomach pain for days now. It happens irregularly, much like a headache does. Not pain all the time, but the pain hits me when I least expect it. Unbearable and annoying pain.

I tried some traditional Chinese medicine, but it didn't work. In the end I went to see a doctor, who prescribed me some pain-alleviating pills, antibiotics and anti-diarrhea pills. "No milk, no oily food," he told me.

Actually, the doctor also couldn't say for sure what is wrong with my stomach. What he did was to help me prevent diarrhea and stomach pain - he treated the symptoms only.

All I can do now is: take pills, eat healthily and rest more. Hope I can get out of this illness soon, 'cause it's annoying.

Before I Go

It's time for me to take a break.

I'm off to find my lumière.

I'll be back when I'm ready.

Till then, adieu, my dear friends.

Jane Eyre

I've read Jane Eyre a few years back, when I was bored and decided to give the classics a go. At that time, I felt the novel was very lengthy and long-winded, but I loved the old language used therein.

This morning I watched the movie version of Jane Eyre directed by Cary Fukunaga. The movie opens with Jane running away. Already makes you curious, doesn't it? As I watched, I realised that this version is told in flashbacks. Fortunately I still remember the plot, so it was pretty easy to follow.

The poetic language sometimes bored me; at other times it amused me to see the characters play with words and beat around the bush to deliver a point. Most of all, I love the scenery. Woods, meadows, hills, streams - absolutely refreshing.

For me, the most well-played characters would be Mrs. Fairfax (the housekeeper) and of course, Jane Eyre (the governess). Very original, different from the book.

However, I find the ending a little too abrupt. It goes like this:

Mr Rochester: A dream?

Jane Eyre: Awaken then.

Mr Rochester is Jane Eyre's beloved, haha. After these lines, the credits started to roll. Too quick.

All in all, a slow movie. If you want something quiet, poignant and romantic, then go for this.

By the way, something new I've learnt: 'Eyre' is pronounced like 'air'. :D

The Rain Stopped

... and so, my second semester's finals drew to a close.

Woohoo!

I just can't believe I've come so far. Tired, lethargic, soporific, drowsy ... these words accompanied me for so long and I would like to say to them: I bid you goodbye!

No matter what the results of this finals will be, I must say: May you come when you come, but let me take a break for now!

I'm on the edge of something final we call life tonight!

Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory" somehow lifted my spirits while I was driving home this afternoon. Also, it inspired me to come up with "Behind A Lorry". Spontaneous, right? :P

Sunday, 7 August 2011

Eh Shortie!

So much going on lately.

Still having my finals, more updates to come in a few day's time.

28/7/11

Awfully quiet here right now in my college. The corridor is not exactly deserted, but still ... unnaturally few students around.

Listened to my mates' impromptu speeches this morning. I think I might enjoy speaking impromptu tomorrow when my turn comes. It's challenging because each speaker is given only a minute to draft a speech based on a randomly chosen title, but if done right it can be enjoyable. With my wild imaginations, I suppose I'll have fun tomorrow ... unless nervousness and time limit beat me.

The whole area above my college has been flooded with foreign and local workers since last week. Employers are trying really hard to register their workers here at the immigration department before July ends. The effects brought upon by hundreds of these workers? Let me list some:
  • Garbage like cigarette butts, empty bottles and plastics strewn everywhere. Drains, sidewalks, stair steps - you name it.
  • Large crowds (standing, sleeping or squatting) that obstruct entrance and exits of nearby premises.
  • Dirty, smelly air, mainly because of so much smoking.
Restaurants and convenience stores actually benefit this time around. Every day you can see people thronging these shops.

I have nothing against these workers, to be just. They contribute a lot and deserve to be treated fairly. It's just that I think a more systemic approach needs to be taken.

Oh yeah, I had a haircut recently. I was told that with my hair shorn so short, I look unfamiliar.

O hair, please grow back faster!

在报章上一直读到刘子千的新闻;

Soldier On!

These days are quietly pleasing. A peaceful week, so far.

Results have been released. Mid-terms, quizzes, term project...I reaped what I had sown. Could've been better, but quite rewarding already.

Will be having presentations next week and the following week. Still doing preparations. Worrying about the presentation materials, trying to get the format done right. Whenever I'm stuck, I pause and do revision for my finals, which will be right after my very last presentation. I just can't wait to have presentations and finals done, so that I can take a break.

To all my mates out there, soldier on!

First Lucid Dream

Last night I lay on my bed, trying not to move a muscle at all, to let sleep overcome me.

I was desperate to have some real, quality sleep time. It just so happened that I had recently read something about 'lucid dreaming', where one is aware that one is dreaming. I decided to give it a test.

I stilled my thoughts, imagining that I was lying at the bottom of a pool. In the past, whenever I pictured myself in this state, I would effortlessly ease myself into dreamland. Always, the pool's bottom had worked for my imagination. I could even make air bubbles appear, or catch the sunlight as it was being refracted by the water into a million pieces. Now, as I lay down motionless, I started slipping away.

There was a sudden, throbbing pulse at the back of my neck. It felt like a moderate electric shock and I was tempted to slap my hand over that pulsing area, but I resisted that feeling and stayed immobile.

Time suspended. My body had gotten into a deep slumber, but my mind was still awake, trying to guess what time it was. I tried opening my eyes, but my eyelids were heavy and shut. I was seeing snowflakes, black, white and grey, swirling, then settling.

Lucid dream?

It felt like my mind had detached itself from my body. Somehow I could not move any part of my body, even though I was consciously aware that I was in my bed, sleeping.

Dream came easily, though. I told myself mentally to wake up, so wake up I did. Everything was still, dark and quiet. I checked the time: not even past midnight. I felt as though I had been travelling over a  long distance for a very long time, but barely an hour passed since I started my experiment.

Good try, but next time I'll just stick with my trusty old method of lying-at-the-bottom-of-a-pool to drift into sleep and I'll move whichever way I want!

Snore~

I was so dead tired yesterday that I snored while I was sleeping last night.

I snored?

I only knew this during dinner just now.

I never heard myself snoring, nor did I wake up in the night.

It amazes me.

I never snored before, and this is the ultimate proof that I'm overworking myself these days.

I must admit that I hate the arrangements of this semester.

So many deadlines clustered together, coupled with minor and major tests!

Nerve-wrecking.

I'm Back, After 2 Weeks

I'm back! With so much nonsense floating around, how can I not come back? How can I give up blogging so soon? I deleted the chatbox though, so I need to find another one.

The 709 thingy is really getting on my nerves. Get a grip, people. Quit making such of big production out of it.

Recently a lecturer of mine showed us this wonderful video. Its music is just so calming, especially in these trying times.

A Shift in Focus

Now that I've finished my mid-terms, my present focus changes from 'study for exams' to 'finish up two term papers'. I'm going to work hard on both of my papers. It's a pledge to myself: I'm not screwing this up.

The best thing is, I have a break tomorrow! I wish I could spend my entire day reading novels and watching movies, but tomorrow really is the perfect time to start finishing one of my papers.

Let's get down to work!

Wednesday, 22 June 2011

48 Hours?

The Star reported that there will be a water supply cut, starting from 8 am today to 8 am Friday.

What the HELL? Third time in June no water supply (in my neighbourhood) ! It lasted one day each for the previous two times. Now it will be two days? Scary man.

The last time happened about two weeks ago. That was already the absolute worst, because we weren't informed of the water cut. At that very night, a water tanker came to distribute water in our neighbourhood. I helped my parents to take and store water from this tanker.

The workers filled our buckets and pails to the brim. How generous!
It was fun because I've never done this before, but after some time my back, shoulders and arms pained from the strain.

So maybe this time similar water tankers will come and dispense water. Maybe the water supply cut will happen at different times for different areas.

At the moment there's still water supply at home, but that won't be long.

Let's hope for the best.

***

I devoted my entire afternoon to preparing for my last paper tomorrow. Practically combed through every page of my textbook, trying to make full sense of it. After reading five chapters, I understood better now. What my lecturer imparted actually came directly from the textbook.

Two more chapters to be digested. Oh wow.

Another Mid-terms

Last week's presentations were OK, but seriously they could've been done better. All in all, the relief that came compensated for the hard work.

Currently dealing with mid-terms. I won't say that it's stressful. It's enjoyable to a certain degree because normal classes are suspended, so once I finish my paper (normally 1.5 to 2 hours), I'm free. However, the papers so far have stumped me. I barely completed them in time. : (

Two more papers left. Wish me luck. : )

12/6/11

This morning I went for a jog with my parents. Last night's anger still raged through me as I ran until I was sweat-soaked. Unlike other times, I wasn't out of breath, gasping for air. Anger serves no purpose? Well, I can think of one now.

That run really did cool my head off. After breakfast I resolved to "rearrange" some things and just be lazy for today. Take a rest. Read a book. Listen to "new songs". Catch up with some "old" movies. Read through three weeks' worth of newspaper and try to find articles related to my assignments. I know these are just distractions, but I really need a break from my rational self and be err... emotional. As in connecting with my emotions and sorting them out.

I'm not worried about money, nor the mid-term exams in the following week. What I'm worried about are the presentations for next week. Or, to be more specific, the presentation materials. I've been working on them for more than a week now, abandoning my English term paper and sacrificing my fun time. I didn't go to that Genting trip with my family last weekend, nor that book fair. Gosh, book fair! Giving up all those pleasures just to get the materials done.

To date I haven't wrap up my work.

But I'm confident that I'll get through this.

:P

我预备好随时回答讲师的问题;

Is This All

Ryan Tedder

Is this all I’ve been waiting for?
Is this all I’ve been searching for?
So is this all I’ve been waiting for?
Waiting for , waiting for…

Up all night, putting final touches to our assignment.
Hope it'll turn out OK tomorrow today.

家里大小事务都要打理;

You Light Up My Life

And you are my sunshine
My life, tonight (You light up my life)
And you are my sunshine
You make me all right (You light up my life)

And you are my sunshine
My life, tonight (You light up my life)
And you are my sunshine
You make me all right (You light up my life)
And you are my sunshine
My life, tonight (You light up my life)
And you are my sunshine

You make me all right (You light up my life)
You make me all right (You light up my life)
You make me all right (You light up my life)

Do It Anyway

This world’s gone crazy
and it’s hard to believe
that tomorrow will be better than today.
Believe it anyway.
— Martina McBride, "Anyway"

Back to my old crazy-study mode, trying to cover everything for the upcoming quizzes. I'm not so worried about my academic stuff, but others issues have been bothering me very much lately.

No matter how tough or boring my studies can be, I'm still capable of handling them since they have predictable patterns. But taking up responsibilities far greater than my own capabilities? I have no faith.

I could lay out my plans for the next day in my head easily, while simultaneously going over what could go wrong in the coming week, what might happen at which hour, whom to expect at where. But now, I can't see ahead. I don't have a single clue about what I'll be facing.

Quizzes aside (at least they are manageable), next week will be a difficult week for me. No doubt about that. I'll either make or break myself, this time 'round.

But I do it anyway....

A Blessing Note

Rise, rise, nation of the East,
and become the great[est] once
again,
You resilient Japan people,
stay strong and bounce back!

One Hour

This morning I woke up damn early (my only class today starts from 1430hrs) just to catch the train. As I was buying my ticket from the booth, a train pulled up opposite from where I stood. OMG!

I broke into one hell of a run immediately after I received my ticket. I raced up the stairs of the pedestrian bridge and charged down towards that bloody train, knowing that I had about a minute or so before the doors would close.

Too bad for me, the doors DID close when I reached the platform. I sat down defeatedly on one of those orange plastic seats, a familiar old man sitting a few chairs away from me. He was the noisiest passenger here; the other day he 'accosted' some random guy and talked to that poor man about politics, scholarships, millionaires and religions.

Three minutes barely passed when another train trundle into sight. I moved away from the women-only coaches and entered the first coach that wasn't full of people blocking the entrance/exit. Cold air blasted all around me and it was very welcoming, even though I had to stand with a hand gripping tightly around a metal pole.

These people could use some entertainment, I thought. Dreadfully boring in here. In my mind I was choreographing some pole dance moves. Just saying... I wouldn't do stupid things in a train full of sleepy people; they won't need that sort of rude wake-up call anyway.

At the third stop there were quite a few empty seats available, so I sat down after seeing that those standing preferred to continue standing.

I hopped off the train at the central station, along with others who pushed me forward. The whole place wasn't very busy and I was able to buy my ticket very quickly.

Believe it or not, the moment I stepped up to the correct platform, my next train came and the doors opened. I never broke my stride and got into the train successfully.

I got off at the next station and threaded my way through the confusing labyrinth of people. To my surprise yet again, four empty buses awaited me. The other passengers were waiting for the driver to appear, so I paced around absently for a while.

About six minutes later, the driver got on on of the buses and revved up the engine. We the passengers paid the fare and sat comfortably waiting. My window seat afforded me a full view of the city's crazy traffic. The sun shone through the clear pane of glass and warmed my cheeks. Inwardly I smiled, thinking of my supposedly good luck this morning. It wasn't luck at all, but simply the perfect timing coming from the public transports.

Exactly twenty minutes later, I reached my college's 'back door'. I checked my time and realised that this journey cost me only one hour.

I feel invigorated, having started off my day pretty well. In situations like this, you just can't help but laugh at your 'luck'.
